城市旅遊 : 法國巴黎 Sainte-Chapelle 聖徒禮拜堂 ｜ WsOH - Wings of Hope
Many of the most well-known tourist sites are the Champs-Élysées, the iconic Eiffel Tower, the Seinne River, and Notre Dame.
Nonetheless, there is also a very astoundingly beautiful place in Paris that less people visit; that is the Sainte-Chappelle.
Initially, when making plans for sight-seeing, I didn’t notice Sainte-Chappele. From looking at images on postcards in a store, I discovered that Paris had many amazing sights that I hadn’t included in my original itinerary. When I saw a postcard with the image of Sainte-Chapelle, I immediately decided that the destination was a must-see.
However, when I first arrived to the chapel, I noticed how different it was from the original image I saw on the postcard. Upon my entry, I didn’t see large masterpieces of stained glass, but instead, a somewhat simple church. I felt rather dissapointed and was prepared to leave, but then I discovered a small spiral staircase next to the entrance; I began to go up the narrow, spiral staircase, and then I saw the spectacular stained glass. Different pieces of stained glass came into view with some of the most beautiful and colorful images I have ever seen. The refractions of light in every piece of glass showcased a full design of beauty.
While enjoying my fascinating surroundings, I asked the tour guide as to why there is such a dramatic difference in design between the upper and lower churches. He told me that the upper floor of Chapelle was used to keep the holic relics and was primarily used by the royal family and their guests.
Additionally, he explained that the lower level was used by courtiers; the servants and soldiers that lived in the palace.
As for the relics, ‘’the crown of thorns’’of Jesus, was purchased by King Louis IX from the King of Jerusalem and stored in the Chapelle for a period of time, and then moved to Notre Dame until the fire of 2019 in Notre Dame de Paris.
Following the fire, the crown was relocated to the Louvre for protection.
The design concept of the entire Sainte-Chapelle is typical of French Gothic Architecture.
This style of architecture focuses on adding an abundant amount of detail to the Gothic towering spire, and the overall purpose is to attain a sense of space unity. Exquisite decorations and a multitude of large windows fill the space with light; the most famous building that incorporates these design ideas is Notre Dame, in its famed rose window.
This particular gothic style of architecture was most popular among European royals at that time, since it could demonstrate imperial power and devotion to the Gods.
Some churches and palaces in Italy, England, and Spain also adopted certain features from French Gothic Architecture design to blend with their own unique style.
◇The stained glass tells stories of the Bible and how the holy objects of Jesus came to France
It is important to take note that the entire Sainte-Chapelle is magnificent. It takes about 2-3 hours to tour it in its entirety because in addition to the beauty of the architecture and glass, there are also carvings and paintings on the walls that are great works. Only by experiencing the power of France in that age, and the prosperous art from that time, can one build such a perfect monument.
